The price of this app is what is holding it back from the top. But, anyone who wants to learn Japanese from English or vice-versa, should invest in this app. Learning Japanese characters is made easier by providing a well structured search to find the desired characters and their meanings.

WOW! - 5 stars - October 16, 2009
Please note! Japanese is NOT just "some other" iPod electronic dictionary. At first I was skeptical: what does it have that, for exampe, the free "Kotoba" doesn't have, to justify the price? But: this program is amazing! It's got many more functions than Kotoba, including providing animated stroke order (the best i've ever seen, and it's proprietary to Japanese, it seems) and hyperlinked example sentences for each entry. also, you can search verbs from any of its conjugation (for example, you can type in MAYOTTE and easily find the dictionary-form verb "mayou"; try doing that on Kotoba), and verb entries have conjugation lists with 16 +/- forms. it allows you to draw kanji as a form of input, though the current version of kotoba does that also; but, unlike Kotoba, it will recommend "similar kanji," which is very useful for those times when the handwritten recognition fails you (this happens equally in Japanese AND Kotoba; I think they use the same character-recognition technology?). also, it allows you to make vocab lists (I am "trying to" to read the "Shounen Jidai" manga right now, and I am making a list of all words I don't know! SOOOO convenient) and add notes to any of the entries. Also, when you look up a kanji, the program gives you all "reference" info you might find on the wwwjdic (for example, the kanji's unique identifying info for Unicode), so that you can do further research. Finally, I have emailed the program's makers a couple of times with questions, and they got back to me right away with useful responses. Get this program if you're serious about using your iPod or iPhone to study Japanese!!

Best Japanese tool in history - 5 stars - October 15, 2009
I sure wish this tool was available when I was a college student! I've used everything from dead tree dictionaries to WordTank to the slew of Japanese dictionary/reference apps on Mac and PC... This app simply slaughters all it's forbears. Terriffic use of the iPhone drill-down-for-more-detail UI metaphor, tremendously useful example sentences, great proprietary databases to augment the open standard ones... I just can't believe it's this good. Bravo.

Things to improve - 3 stars - October 13, 2009
Don't get me wrong, this is pretty good. I use it more than Kotoba. However, there are several flaws that get annoying fast. When trying to type in a word using the "search" field, many times it doesn't respond or the keyboard pops up or disappears. In fact, many UI presses seem not to register properly. I have no other app on my phone that does that.

Already excellent, but can still be fine-tuned - 4 stars - October 13, 2009
I am really impressed with this app. With continued tweaking in future updates, I might be able to do away with the expensive electronic dictionary entirely. A few suggestions for the future:

Final Beta is Out - 2.0 Will be Out Very Soon - 5 stars - October 11, 2009
I've tested this beta, and you're gonna be blown away. There are so many updates on this version, it's incredible. With the size of the update, the app is still incredibly fast. It's going to take you a while to get through all the updates, they're everywhere, but without big changes to the UI. It's friggin awesome.
I don't want to spoil the release, but it's coming very soon. I've written multiple emails to the programmer myself, about the time between updates. If I knew from the start, that this would be the final result, I can't begin to tell how worthwhile the wait would have been. Trust me, you WILL say that this is THE BEST Japanese app available.
Feel free to doubt, but just remember my words when this update blows you away.
